the little folio

I just discovered a new product that is so very adorable. An expandable folio of ten images that is pocket-sized. They come in a set of three, so it’s perfect for the holidays…one for you and two to give away…

mosquitos anyone?

Last week I headed to the Arboretum with a family and it turned out pretty comically. At first, things were all good. Kids were playing and running around. No mud on the clothes yet.

Then, the mosquitos decided to join us. And it wasn’t just one or two, but an entire army of them. We made our way through the prairie amid the clouds of flying bloodsuckers. And then, the sky started to darken. Ironically, at our session last year we finished just in time for a big downpour.

As we attempted to take a few more shots, we were just laughing at the whole situation. Rain, mosquitos, muddy kids! What a perfect family portrait day. And then, to top it all off…guess what I found in my car’s side pocket when I got back to the studio? You got it. Bug dope.

why jump?

For some time, at the end of my sessions, I ask the person or persons I am photographing to jump. Yes, jump.

Sometimes I get a strange look and then 99% of the time, they go for it. It’s hilarious. Everyone laughs and it creates a whole new energy. And in some cases, I keep shooting after and those are the best images of the day.

And I have found that the jump is often reflective of one’s personality. I’ve had a diver look like she is about to jump into cold water, a ballerina look graceful, a former model fly in 4 inch heels perfectly, and a guy doing a guitar jam in mid-air.

Take a minute and think about the last time you jumped in the air…now go ahead and try it when no one is looking, or if you’re daring, in the middle of a crowded room. Trust me, you’ll be smiling after you land.
